Places of interest in Spain – Avila
Mood:  cool

Topic: Travel-Destination
Avila is Spain’s highest capital province. The provincial rule of Avila changed hands from The Romans to the Moors, who ruled it for about three centuries, until finally it came under Christian rule in the year 1085. Avila has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.

Avila has many places of interest for the tourist.

Capilla de Mosen Rubi:

This chapel built around 1516 now belongs to a Dominican nunnery. The uniqueness of this chapel is that it contains the Christ’s polychrome figure. This most revered place draws large crowd every day.

Cathedral:

Construction of this cathedral is said to have taken about three centuries, finally being completed in the 14th century. This is the Cathedral of San Salvador. The cathedral is built of granite, with two towers, and its doors are beautifully carved. Unfortunately the sculptural work was damaged due to pollution. The granite work inside the cathedral is a masterpiece of architecture. The restoration work is now going on.

Jewish settlement:

People belonging to the Jewish community still live in this part of the city. Their Jewish costumes, dress and religious practices are interesting to watch.

Walls around the town:

The town is surrounded by a wall which is about 2800 yards long and about 40 feet high. The wall has 9 gates. Observation posts have been set up on the walls at vantage points and at a convenient distance between two posts. It is a pleasure to watch this great wall. At regular intervals, steps have been provided to climb up the wall.

Plaza De Santa Teresa:

This is the shopping area where traditional works by the local Jewish community and other inhabitants are sold. It has many restaurants and bars where tapas and other drinks are served. The rates are quite reasonable to suit every type of visitor.

Gothic buildings:

Most of the buildings in Avila are of Gothic architecture. The Cathedral of Avila is a holy place and even this building dating back to the medieval period has been built in the traditional Gothic style. This place is a pilgrimage center and many people visit it.

San Pedro Church:

This church built during the 12th and 13th century is admired for its large rose windows. The Moran painting, ‘Saint Peter in Chains,’ is believed to have been done in 1673 and adorns the wall of this holy place.

There are numerous villas to ensure a comfortable stay for the visitors.

Spain, the tourist center of Europe

Topic: Travel-Destination
If anyone tries to map the tourist centers in Spain, he would certainly end up getting dizzy because every city, town, village and for that matter every nook and corner of Spain has something interesting for the tourist. In fact tourism is one of the most flourishing industries in Spain. There are so many places to see that it is almost impossible for the tourist to see all these places in one go. He has to make repeated trips to Spain, spend weeks and months to see some of the most important places of interest to tourists.

What are the places to see?

As said earlier, this question is very difficult. Barcelona, Madrid, Cantabria, Andalucia, Toledo,Benidorm, and the Basque country are some of the places picked from the big list of cities, towns and villages in Spain. There are many beaches like Costa Blanca, medieval towns, the birth place of the bullfight, caves, arches, medieval churches, forts, castles, parks, museums, restaurants serving mouth-watering local dishes, rows and rows of shops, rows of mountains, and innumerable villas, apartments and hotels to accommodate the guests for a most pleasant and peaceful stay.

The most interesting part is that the government of Spain is making every effort to preserve the country’s cultural heritage. It is spending millions of Euros to preserve the churches and all other types of museums, monuments, churches, etc. which date back to several centuries ago.

History:

Many of the ancient civilizations have left deep-rooted cultural impressions on the people of Spain. Some of the known civilizations or settlements that have left their mark on the lives of the Spanish people are the Celts, Moors, Muslims, and Romans. These civilizations have made Spain a city of varied cultures, beliefs and practices. Even to this day festivals and other cultural activities are held by all the various religious denomination according to their respective traditions.

Plan your itinerary:

This is a very important aspect of your visit. Some of the places like Madrid are ideally visited during the months of July and August. There are some provinces like the Canary Islands which are preferably visited during summer. However, there are many travel agencies who prepare the itinerary to suit the convenience of the tourist.

Accommodations:

There are many villas, hotels and apartments which offer a wide range of prices for accommodations. All these are luxurious villas but are within the reach of every type of tourist. Rooms can also be booked online.

Madrid is the heartthrob of Spain. Some tourists say that it is always better to go round this city on foot because if one goes by car, he would miss many of the places worth seeing. There is so much to see; great museums, parks, markets, churches, cable car and what not. Unless the tour is well planned, the tourist will certainly miss many of the places worth seeing. An attempt has been made to introduce few of the important places in this great city.

Museums: Of all the museums that are there in Madrid, following three museums are considered to be the best:

Museo del Prado: This museum is about 191 years old. It has the most prestigious painting called ‘Las Meninas’ by the famous painter Diego Velzquez of Spain. Apart from this, it has a huge collection of works of European art of 12th century to 19th century. It has a huge collection of more than 10000 objects, all of which are on display.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: It has a large collection of paintings from all over the world. Although it has collections of works of earlier periods also, it has a rich collection of works of the 20th century. This museum has with it about 1600 most prestigious works from all over the world.

Queen Sofia Art Centre: Although this museum was opened very recently in the year 1992, it has come to limelight in a very short span of time. It has a good collection of modern art belonging to the 20th century. It has a specialized library which is dedicated for the works of art.

Puerta del Sol:

Located at the busiest place of Madrid city, this plaza is deemed to be the heart of Madrid. The imposing statue of a bear (oso) which is climbing the ‘madrono’ tree is located near the plaza. In fact, this is Madrid’s symbol. The measurement of the national highway starts from here and this point is called the point zero. The neon symbol of ‘Tio Pepe’ is located just over the plaza. It is from here that the clock’s ringing to announce the arrival of the ‘New Year’ is broadcast the world over.

La Casa de Campo:

This was actually a park of the Royal family. A part of the park has been converted as a zoo. The entire place is peaceful and the best place for relaxation. This park is very near to the Palacio Real, the palace of the royal family.

Places of Visit in Spain – Barcelona

Topic: Travel-Destination
Any one visiting Spain will never miss a visit to Barcelona. It is such a beautiful place and in and around Barcelona there are many places of interest for the tourist. In fact many of the places have historical importance also. Just a little away from Barcelona there are places to enjoy; the beautiful nature, imposing coves, restaurants serving choicest traditional food of Barcelona, captivating places for wood walk, luxurious villas for comfortable stay, etc. While in Barcelona there are so many places to visit which keeps the tourist engaged throughout the day as well as at night! Guell Park is one such place which is worth visiting.

Guell Park:

The Park has a history of its own. The area where the park is now situated is actually a rocky area. It was actually meant for a commercial housing complex. But the plan did not get support and only one house was built on experimental basis. But even this house was could not be sold. It was Mr. Eusebi Guell who conceived the idea of converting it into a park. The Garden City Movement of Britain instigated Mr. Guell to convert this proposed housing complex into a garden. That was in the year 1904. The only house that was built was bought by Mr. Guell himself. That was in the year 1906. This park has been named after Mr. Guell, and was called ‘Guell Parc’ which later became ’Guell Park’.

This municipal park can be reached by underground railway. The entrance to the park is free. The main terrace of the park shaped in the form a serpent presents an imposing view. Beautifully laid roads inside the park were actually meant for the proposed houses. The roads have colonnaded foot paths and pathways. As soon as one reaches the top, he will have a spectacular view of the city of Barcelona.

The serpentine shape bench is so artistically designed that it can be used by people to comfortably sit on and chat in privacy! Beautiful tiles have been used in making of this serpentine bench so that it would dry quickly after rain. The terrace has many bird nests that house many pigeons, sparrows and many other birds.

Topic: Travel-Destination
If anyone were to ask what is there to see in Spain; then it would be very difficult to answer this question. This is because the list of places to be seen in Spain is very big and it would be very difficult to remember all of them. So, only some of the places are being introduced here:

Costa de la Luz:

Certainly this is a most attractive tourist spot. This vast coast line is less populated and is the most ideal place for those who want to spend their holiday in a most peaceful environment. In fact most of the Spanish tourists prefer this place and now it has become more and more popular among other foreign tourists also. This port was a popular trade centre in the 16th century for Americans who used to trade in precious metals like gold and silver.

What to see?

There are two cathedrals; of which one is old. Just go to the roof top of the cathedral; you will be certainly immersed in the beauty of nature. The Mother Nature appears in her full colors.  There is another cathedral of the 11th century which has most spectacular building, a challenge to the architects. The Playa de la Victoria beach is just walking distance away. Just drive for about 30 minutes on the beautiful road to reach the nearest city Jerez de la Frontera. One can enjoy the taste of beautiful wines in the bars across the road. In fact, many of these bars serve the famous ‘Sherris Sack’ imported from England.

For those who are interested in spending their time in the wild, there is a National Park which is located just at the foot of the great mountains. Needless to say, the place offers the most spectacular view of the mountains. The place is so beautiful that the visitor will certainly change his mind and prefer to stay in this beautiful environment for quite some days at least. From the top of the mountain you can see the most spectacular view of the village down below, Gibraltar straits, the great mountain Atlas, Coast line of North Africa and many other places.

There are beautiful villas for a comfortable stay.

Selecting the best place for holidaying is easy; because Spain is the most ideal place for holidaying. But selecting the best place for holidaying in Spain is very difficult. This is because every corner of Spain is ideal for holidaying. Let us just go round one or two places of importance for tourists in Spain:

Pedraza:

This medieval period small village is just about one hour drive from Madrid. The village is situated near the Segovia. The villagers are proud of their village because it is a place where many noblemen lived. The narrow cobbled street reminds the visitor of beautiful days of the yester years when the Castilla inhabitants lived there centuries ago. Many of the houses of noblemen have been restored to their previous glory. There are many places to visit in Pedraza. Santa Maria Church built in the year 1500 presents a most imposing view. Pedraza Castle rebuilt in the 15th century is another marvelous example of architectural expertise of people of early settlement. Plaza Mayor, beautiful medieval town square with surrounding park is worth seeing. There are many hotels and villas to comfort the tourists. There are many restaurants serving the most popular local dishes like local vegetables, lentil stews, etc.

Ceutí:

There is an adage ‘where there is a will, there is a way’. This is true of Ceutí, located in the province Murica. Thanks to the innovative methods of the young Mayor Manuel Hurtado, this small village which had suffered many economic failures, failing industries and faced other odds has now limped back to normalcy and today it is the hub of cultural activity. The villagers learnt more about modern art and made it their living. It was a successful venture. The villagers earned enormous money. The money earned through the art and exhibitions is spent by the government for social activities. There are many places to visit in this village; it’s beautiful environment, the most imposing view of the village, old churches and parks are some of them. There are also villas in the nearby Murica province as well as in Ceuti. There is enough scope for recreation. Just a visit will convince the visitor.

Spain is Really Wonderful

Topic: Travel-Destination
Yes, it is really so. This is a wonderful country; look at its nature, culture and tradition, museums, parks, monuments, churches, buildings, villas, it is all wonderful. Some of the wonderful traditions which have attracted tourists are mentioned in this article:

La Corrida:

This is actually bullfight. This tradition is so old that it dates back to the time of Plato. In Spain, La Corrida is considered to represent virility and it is followed as a ritual from time immemorial. During medieval period, La Corrida training centers were established. Now, this game is held every Sunday afternoon. The bull fighter and his two assistants who are on a horse pierce blades on the back of the bull. This will weaken the bull and a fully tired bull is then killed by a metallic sword. The dead bull is treated with dignity; after a procession it is given to the butcher. Many tourists congregate to view this bull fight. Although some do not agree with this fight, many still acclaim this tradition.

Toledo:

Toledo is the name of a city in Spain as well as the name of a festival held annually in that city. This festival is so popular that people from different faiths and religions congregate to celebrate this festival. In fact this festival has been declared as an ‘international tourist event’. In short, the festival is marked to celebrate the most cohesive living of people belonging to three different cultures and religions; namely, Christians, Arabs and Jews in the city of Toledo since about 8 AD.

The festival is held at Mosque of Cristo de la Luz, a place in Toledo. To reach this holy place, people have to cross three holy gates which represent the three religions. Special Toledo cuisine is prepared which consists of mushrooms and stewed partridge. Special soups are also prepared. A mind blowing colorful procession is also held. The festival is held nine weeks after Easter. For the people of Toledo, Corpus Christi is a holy day which is celebrated with great religious fervor.

During the period of this festival, the tourists never miss visiting the church of Santa Maria, San Juan Bautista which is believed to have been built centuries ago. Tourists also take this opportunity to visit the old castle, National park and mountains surrounding this city.

It is always advisable to book the accommodation in advance. There are many apartments and villas in Toledo to welcome the tourists.
